Google has published its first official guide to optimizing for generative AI features in Search, and the industry reaction has been broadly correct: AI search is still SEO, and most of the “GEO hacks” of the past year were never doing anything.
That reading is right. It is also incomplete in a way that matters.
Nearly every summary of the guide skipped a hard eligibility requirement stated plainly in the technical section — one that determines whether your pages can appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode at all, regardless of how good your content is. Most commentary was also written in late June, before Google revised the document on 10 July 2026. This article works from the current version, and it separates what Google actually committed to from what the coverage assumed.
Google’s central claim is structural rather than tactical. AI Overviews and AI Mode are not a separate product with a separate index. They run on the same core ranking and quality systems as standard Search, and they reach your content through two mechanisms:
Retrieval-augmented generation, which Google also calls grounding, retrieves relevant pages from the existing Search index and generates a response from what those pages actually say, with clickable links back to the supporting sources.
Query fan-out, where the model generates a set of concurrent related queries to gather more context than the original question provides. Google’s own example: a query about fixing a weedy lawn fans out into herbicide options, chemical-free removal, and prevention.
The consequence follows directly. There is no separate index to optimize for, which is why Google’s position is that AEO and GEO describe the same work SEO always described. If your page is not in the Search index, it cannot be retrieved, and nothing downstream matters.
Here is the line that went missing from the commentary.
To appear in generative AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. That part is familiar. But Google adds a second condition: the site must also be “included in Search generative AI features in Search Console” to be eligible for display.
That is a settings-level gate, not a content quality judgment. It sits in Search Console, separate from indexing, and it can exclude an otherwise healthy site from every AI surface Google operates.
Check it before you spend a single hour on content structure. A site that has been excluded — by an old configuration decision, a cautious developer, or a publisher-era opt-out made when AI Overviews were controversial — will not appear in AI Overviews no matter how much non-commodity expertise it publishes. This is the cheapest, highest-leverage item in the entire guide, and it is the one item that the round of commentary in June almost universally left out.
Google also pairs this with a blunt reminder that meeting every requirement still guarantees nothing. Indexing and serving are not promised.
The guide includes a list of things you can stop doing. The list is accurate, but three items have been flattened in the retelling, and the nuance is where the practical decisions live.

The llms.txt distinction is the one worth internalizing. Google ignoring the file is not the same as the file being useless. Google’s guidance covers Google, and other systems may read it. If you maintain one, you are not harming your Google visibility — you are simply not helping it either.
The structured data point deserves the same care. “Not required for AI search” is not “stop doing it.” Google explicitly recommends keeping structured data as part of overall SEO, because rich-result eligibility is a separate benefit that has not gone away.
This is the part that reads as permissive and is not.
Google discusses query fan-out as a mechanism, and the natural marketer’s response is to build content targeting the fan-out queries. The guide forecloses that directly: creating separate content for every possible variation of how people might search, including fan-out queries, primarily to influence rankings or AI responses, violates Google’s scaled content abuse spam policy.
That is a spam policy citation, not a best-practice suggestion. It carries different weight.
The distinction is intent and quantity. Structuring one page so its answer is clear and retrievable is fine. Generating forty near-duplicate pages to blanket the sub-queries a model might produce is the thing being named as abuse. A lot of advice circulating right now sits uncomfortably close to the second.
Google’s stated alternative is unglamorous: publish fewer pages with genuine expertise. The guide contrasts commodity content — the generic listicle that anyone could have written — against material drawn from actual first-hand experience, and says the latter will influence long-run AI visibility more than anything else in the document.
Four items from the guide received almost no attention.
There is now a measurement tool. Search Console has a Generative AI performance report covering how content performs in Google’s AI features and Discover. Much of the current advice tells you to manually run your queries through AI assistants and observe. Useful, but Google is shipping first-party data and most coverage did not mention it exists.
Google warns explicitly about third-party tools that claim access to internal ranking or AI metrics. No such access exists. This is worth sitting with, because a great deal of AI-visibility commentary is built on third-party datasets — including the studies most frequently cited about this very guide.
Images and video are named as opportunities, not afterthoughts. Google’s AI features surface relevant visual media, which means additional ways to appear beyond a text link. Existing image and video SEO practice already covers this.
Agentic behaviour is more specific than “agents are coming.” Google describes browser agents inspecting rendered screenshots, the DOM, and the accessibility tree. That last one is the practical detail: work you have done for screen readers is work that makes your site legible to agents. The technical section is where Google’s advice touches infrastructure, and where the guide is more demanding than its reassuring tone suggests.
Two requirements sit underneath everything: your content must be crawlable, because Google’s generative features work from publicly accessible crawlable content, and you must provide a good page experience — which Google’s own wording includes reducing latency.
Latency is a server property before it is a front-end one. A page cannot render quickly if the origin is slow to respond, and no amount of image optimization recovers a poor time to first byte.
